The Journal of Bahá’í Studies welcomes the submission of articles that are relevant to Bahá’í Studies defined in its widest sense. Articles should be of interest to and readable by an interdisciplinary audience, should demonstrate original thought, and should make a positive contribution to the advancement of knowledge.
There is no fixed limit on length, but most articles fall between 5,000 and 14,000 words.
Submissions that meet the basic criteria are submitted for anonymous peer review by outside readers selected by the editors, whose recommendations for revision will be shared with authors.
Submissions should include the following:
- A cover letter stating that the manuscript is not under consideration elsewhere and giving the Association permission to circulate the manuscript for review purposes. If the material has been previously published in another form, including on the World Wide Web, that fact should be explained in the cover letter. The JBS will consider reprinting articles previously published elsewhere under certain circumstances.
- A title page giving the article title and name of the author(s), affiliation, complete address, telephone/fax, and e-mail address. Because referees review the manuscript without knowing the author’s identity, the author’s name should not appear anywhere in the manuscript itself.
- An abstract, on a separate page, of 50–100 words, summarizing the main points of the article.
- A biographical note about the author of not more than 100 words should also be included.
- The manuscript text should be supplied as an electronic copy (preferably in Microsoft Word) sent by e-mail either as a Microsoft Word (.doc, .docx) or rich text format (.rtf) file.
- Citations within the text should be formatted according to MLA style as parenthetical citations within the text. Authors are responsible for the completeness and accuracy of quotations and of all publication information, and should check all such information carefully.
- All notes should be placed as a numerical list at the end of the manuscript as endnotes.
- A Works Cited page that includes publication on every work (and only those works) referred to in the text, in alphabetical order by author.
For examples of citations and Works Cited, authors are urged to examine a recent issue of the Journal of Bahá’í Studies. Information on how to prepare a manuscript in MLA style can be found in MLA Style Manual and Guide to Scholarly Publishing by Joseph Gibaldi, MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers by Joseph Gibaldi, and on a number of Web sites including http://www.library.cornell.edu/resrch/citmanage/mla.
For matters of style, punctuation, and spelling, authors should consult the most recent edition of the Chicago Manual of Style.
Articles should be sent to the Editors at editor@bahai-studies.ca.
